These four boxes are scarier than the scariest shit Halloween can throw at me.
There is my problem. I am not sure what happened before this, and I need your help to solve this problem afterward.
What do you think caused this, and what’s the best course of action for this kind of problem?

I’m not sure what caused it, but the solution seems easy enough.

I’m in a position where I can’t throw money at the problem.

I swear Mac computers have expiration dates. They usually die/slow down significantly after around 4 years.
While meanwhile, at work we have PCs that have been running strong for over 10 years.

that’s a terrible solution

download the free version of malwarebytes here

run a scan and clean if it reports anything, reboot

Or you could just put Linux on his existing hardware. I use it on my spare desktop and my laptop (my main desktop is Win10) and it’s been rock solid.

What’s concerning is that these are basic system functions. Have you recently installed/uninstalled programs? If you didn’t have this before it’s being caused by some sort of change in the system.
If it’s a persistent error, I tend to use system restore to go back to a point where I know my system was fine, but that relies on the fact that you have a good restore point setup in the first place.

So it does this all the time now, also after restarts...? Does it take awhile before this happens? Is it imediate with restarts? General slowness all the time?
Details are needed! :)
Symptoms like this can sometimes mean a dying hard drive - back your stuff up if it is important, to be safe. Give me more details though and I’ll see what I can suggest.
In the meantime, install the ‘Standard’ version of a program called CrystalDiskInfo (free online) and send me screenshots of it’s output plz and thanks!

So your solution is to pay over double and do less than 25% of what Windows can do.

It was sarcasm.

Currently doing that now.

I just being my usual sarcastic self. Is nuke and pave an option? I’ve never had success fixing (what looks like) registry issues on a windows machine before. Or install Linux. I’ve resorted to that when I’ve not had the ability or budget for upgrading or updating.

Sitrep: So I gave the PC a hard kill, turned it on again, and I can get regedit running again.
Huh.

Huh.

I’ve done the same with a number of aging windows machines over the years. It’s a fantastic way to get more utility out of an older machine. And WINE gets better with each passing decade. Mostly.

Weirdly, I’ve never really had a need to try using WINE. LibreOffice does enough for me to get by with it - networking works great for shared folders, etc. Hell, I was still using a 2.0ghz single-core Pentium4 Dell Inspiron with 2GB RAM until about a month and a half ago when I was given this newer laptop to fix up. Yes, not fast at all....yes, Youtube vids would only play smoothly at like 320p, but it was fine enough for what I used it for! :)
Only issue I’ve ever really had is, of course, printers can be a bit of a pain with Linux. But, I just have to copy the file to my desktop on the network and print it from there. No big deal.

I’ve still got my Macbook Pro from my freshman year of college, still running fine after 8 years.
![]() 10/30/2016 at 11:24 |

Is it running about as good as normal?
![]() 10/30/2016 at 11:30 |

Yes. Apparently. Fortunately.

I’ve also observed this phenomenon. I think it’s an iPhone generation thing, when it starts having problems toss it and get another. Meanwhile my Mac has done pretty well for five years, and my parents’ only has a hard drive fail in its 9 years. Hell, my dad’s still using a Blueberry iMac to digitize his vinyl collection.

Now you can buy a new Macbook that you can’t even upgrade at all! And can’t plug in a standard USB flash drive/keyboard/mouse/hard drive/tons of other devices without a dongle. Oh, and you need a dongle to connect to an external non-Apple display.
And they’re charging double the price in terms of hardware.

I’d be real tempted to restore to sometime before this started happening, that looks like a mess.
